State-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga will allow travelers to pass through Cikarang Utama toll gates free if the queues of vehicles reach 5 kilometers to avoid worsening traffic congestion as people start returning to Jakarta and its neighboring cities.

The decision was made during a meeting between the toll road operator, the Transportation Ministry and the National Police, on Thursday.

“The decision was made to help vehicles flow smoothly when leaving the toll roads,” said head of West Java Transportation Agency Dedi Taufik in the provincial capital of Bandung.

In an effort to ease the burden on the main toll road, the police will also guide travelers to exit from Cibatu toll gate and to re-enter the toll road again from Cibitung toll gate. Travelers were also advised to exit the toll road from Cikarang Barat toll gate.

A contra-flow lane – a traffic engineering term for a lane, which flows in the opposite direction to surrounding lanes – will be implemented for lanes usually used for travelers from Jakarta from KM 68 to 40 after the police made considerations about the number of vehicles likely to pass through the toll road, he added.

People who celebrated Idul Fitri in their hometowns in East Java, Yogyakarta and Central Java have begun returning to Jakarta. The number of the travelers is expected to peak on Saturday and Sunday before work begins on Monday.
