COMMENTARY

Dear Editor,

As a public communication analyst with over a decade of experience in the tourism industry, I believe Suriname’s emergence as a potential top global oil producer presents a significant opportunity to position the country as a premier business destination.

With the world’s estimated highest projected oil production growth through 2035, Suriname could and should be on the radar of international investors.

However, despite this economic boom, the country still receives a relatively small number of tourists and mostly not real tourists but families visiting their kin, not spending on hotels or trips to the interior.

This newfound status can be leveraged to attract business tourism, fostering growth across industries connected to oil and gas as well as possibilities the CO2 markets offer.

With the right strategies—such as infrastructure development, streamlined investment policies, and targeted marketing—Suriname could and should diversify its economy and establish itself as a hub for commerce, innovation, and sustainable development.

Some key opportunities include:

  • Eco-Conferences & Sustainable Business Retreats: Suriname’s rich biodiversity and strong conservation efforts make it an ideal location for international forums focused on sustainability.
  • CO2, CyberSecurity,Oil and Gas Industry Events: Hosting international energy conferences could attract major investors and strengthen Surinames’s role in the global energy market.

Already, companies from scores of sectors and more than 50 countries are engaging with Suriname’s oil and gas industry.

Expanding these summits can further position the country as a key meeting point for international energy leaders and policymakers.

By capitalizing on these opportunities, Suriname can build a thriving business tourism sector that complements its resource-driven economy.

The time to act and keep expanding is now.

Yours truly,
