His career started modestly at ING, where he quickly distinguished himself with his analytical sharpness and strategic insight. This opened doors to further growth opportunities within the banking world, leading him to take on a prominent role at Fortis Bank. Here, he had the chance to further develop his expertise in international markets, with assignments in some of the world’s most dynamic financial centers.
Throughout his career, Pronk has worked exceptionally successfully in cities such as Montevideo in Uruguay, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Luanda (Angola) or Baku in Azerbaijan, advising major (oil) companies as well as governments.
Now, at the beginning of 2025, he is semi-retired, but he remains busy with his investments, including those in Suriname.
“The developments in my homeland keep me engaged almost daily,” he says, “but I do not want to impose myself in any way. Moreover, it is not easy since my name does not circulate there. However, I always consider a good and solid proposal from Suriname. I cannot refuse that, given my history. I do not even need to earn a cent from it because money has never been my driving force.”
He gives a meaningful look as I examine him closely, recalling a previous visit from his apartment in Monaco, the world’s most famous millionaire center, where he lives with Jelena, his Russian wife. Monaco, along with Dubai and Singapore, is frequented by the modern financial world’s jet set.
He is also deeply involved in various financial aspects of the current global economy, which he describes as being at a crucial moment, from creating new money and credit lines for countries to addressing pressing financial matters.
In Moscow, where he advises transitioning companies as a banker, he invites us to dine at some of the most famous restaurants in the culinary world, offering the chance to enjoy exquisite dishes. A similar invitation follows six months later in Switzerland.
We first met Pronk in the 1980s in Rio de Janeiro while working as a young broadcast journalist for international media such as the BBC, The Washington Times, the Dutch VPRO, and NOS.
With his valuable financial and business advice, but most importantly, his loyal friendship and support, we were able to start a successful multimedia company that reached stratospheric heights, thanks to him.
In every region where he has lived—whether South America, Europe, Africa, Central Asia, or Russia—he quickly adapted to local economic and political conditions, playing a key role in large-scale financial projects and investment strategies.
This was also due to his impressive mastery of multiple foreign languages.
“My Spanish and Russian are probably my best, alongside Dutch,” he laughs heartily, a laugh that somehow reminds me of the Central Market in Paramaribo.
His work extended beyond cities like Montevideo and Moscow; he was active in numerous other financial markets, committed to banking expansion and complex financial structures.
