Amsterdam, Oct. 7th 2024– The Hotel Majapahit in central Surabaya on East Java, Indonesia, is much more than just any luxury hotel.

What else can we say?

It is a living symbol of Indonesia’s rich history, culture, and resilience. For those who would want to know and are interested of course.

Under the leadership of Mr. Kahar and his dedicated team, the hotel is poised to continue its legacy and play a vital role in the country’s tourism industry.

By prioritizing exceptional guest experiences and never forgetting the most important sustainability question in this largest Muslim country on Earth, its community engagement Hotel Majapahit is setting a new standard for hospitality in Indonesia and beyond.

Yes: you read that well: and beyond.

Hotel Majapahit, a historic landmark in Surabaya, Indonesia, stands as a testament to the country’s rich heritage and resilience. This iconic establishment has played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s history, and its General Manager, Mr.Kahar, is dedicated to ensuring that it continues to thrive and contribute to the community.

The Fabulous History

Founded in 1910 as the Oranje Hotel and built by the brothers Sarkies, who also were active in Singapore where they built the Raffles Hotel, and other SE Asian countries and regions. But our Hotel Majapahit has witnessed the ebb and flow of Indonesia’s political landscape.

The hotel served as a gathering place for Dutch colonial officials and local elites, but it was during the Indonesian Revolution (1945-1949) that it truly gained significance. It became the headquarters of the Indonesian National Revolutionary Army, and its halls echoed with the strategic planning that led to the country’s independence.

In recognition of its historical importance, the hotel was renamed Hotel Majapahit after the Majapahit Empire, one of the most powerful Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Southeast Asia. This new identity symbolized Indonesia’s cultural heritage and its aspirations for a strong and independent nation.

Mr. Kahar’s Vision for Hotel Majapahit

Under the leadership of Mr. Kahar, Hotel Majapahit has embarked on a journey of revitalization and growth, bringing it into our timeframe but never, never ever forgetting its rich cultural history.

Mr. Kahar

As the General Manager, he always seems to have time for his guests, listening to their stories, impeccably dressed, he is passionate about preserving the hotel’s legacy while adapting it to the changing needs of modern travelers.

Mr. Kahar’s vision is to position Hotel Majapahit firmly as a leading luxury hotel within the Accor Group, renowned for its exceptional service, authentic Indonesian hospitality, and commitment to sustainability.

Mr. Kahar and his team, where Ms. Daisy and Ms. Nubella as well as many, many others made a lasting impression, have implemented several initiatives to enhance the hotel’s offerings.  Such as the recent renovations and upgrades when he commissioned extensive renovations to ensure that its facilities meet the highest global standards of comfort and luxury. This includes modernizing the guest rooms, upgrading the public spaces, and enhancing the hotel’s infrastructure.

He also made sure that his hotel is actively involved in the local community, supporting various social and environmental initiatives. Plus: it collaborates closely with local organizations to promote tourism and economic development. He regularly talks to the Governor of Surabaya about these questions. Guests who are keen on these kind of questions know that he is open to focusing and creating personalized and very memorable experiences for his guests. That is not only  offering a wide range of amenities, including a spa, fitness center, and swimming pool. But additionally, the hotel’s staff is trained to provide exceptional service and anticipate guests’ needs.

Ms. Daisy

Ms. Daisy

Take Ms. Daisy for instance: always, without exception, never using the escape formula being too busy or some other excuse, but instead offers extra time to sip an additional cup of tea and chat some more. How she manages to do it, I don’t know, but witness from my own experience giving me the idea that the idea of Time Management has a different meaning in Surabaya, at the Hotel Majapahit and with Ms. Daisy than in the West. The way she talks about her commitment to preserving its historical heritage. The hotel has taken steps to protect its architectural features and has incorporated Indonesian cultural elements into its design and décor.

A Commitment to Sustainability

In addition to its historical and cultural significance, Hotel Majapahit is also dedicated, so Mr. Kahar telles me, to environmental sustainability. Mr.Kahar and his team recognize the importance of addressing the pressing issue of plastic pollution and promoting environmental awareness for the good and benefit of all. The hotel has implemented several initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, including: reducing plastic waste for instance which is an enormous problem in Indonesia.

The hotel has taken steps to eliminate single-use plastic items, such as straws, bottles, and bags. It has also implemented recycling programs to divert waste from landfills. ” We therefore promote Promoting energy efficiency as we have  invested in energy-efficient equipment and practices to reduce its carbon footprint”, he says with his dazzling smile. This includes using LED lighting, optimizing energy consumption, and implementing renewable energy sources.

Hotel Majapahit: A Rich Living Legacy of Indonesia

One of the least talked about but probably most important features about the Majapahit is educating guests and staff. As the hotel has launched educational campaigns to raise awareness about environmental issues among its guests and staff. This includes providing information about sustainable practices and encouraging guests to participate in eco-friendly initiatives.

And of course we are supporting local conservation efforts: The hotel collaborates with local organizations to support conservation projects and protect the environment. This includes participating in beach clean-ups, tree planting initiatives, and wildlife conservation programs.

By focusing on sustainability, this unique Hotel Majapahit is not only contributing to a healthier planet but also demonstrating its commitment to corporate social responsibility. This approach aligns with the growing demand for sustainable tourism and helps to position the hotel as a responsible and ethical choice for travelers.

As far as we are concerned it is an outstanding example for many, many other luxury hotels around our fragile globe. Because it’s the top. Of the top.
